I painted this over 7 years ago..... and it couldn't be more relevant today... how... how is this still happening? How many more lives will be lost before these nets are finally removed? When will @david_crisafulli

These three dragons have been a big learning curve

These three dragons have been a big learning curve for me.
.
Whilst completing these I purchased my first fine art printer and scanner. I have done some art reproduction over the years for my products, but learning the ins and outs of reproducing work to the level of fine art prints is another ball game!
.
I am so incredibly happy how these have turned out and my vision in creating this seadragon poster with the three species together has turned out perfectly!
.
I have my work cut out for me in updating a very neglected print store! So coming soon I will have whale posters, shark posters and these seadragons coming up along with much much more!
.
Ive also been incredibly terrible at updating my originals online with plenty beauties that are up for grabs.

Ruby Sea Dragon 'Phyllopteryx dewysea'

A few fun facts about these beautiful fish:
.
🐉 they are a marine fish in the family Syngnathidae which includes seahorse, pipefish and sea dragons
.
🐟 They are a brilliant ruby red colour, which obviously is where they get their name.
.
🐉 They live a lot deeper than weedy and Leafy sea dragons (3-25m) with the Ruby recorded at depths of greater than 50m
.
❤️ their red colouration is an effective camouflage strategy, red light doesnt reach these depths; effectively making it hidden in plain sight
.
🍃they lack the leaf-like appendages possessed by the other sea dragon species which are used to camouflage in their kelp and sea grass habitats. In the sparse habitat the Ruby's inhabit, appendages would serve little purpose as camouflaging agents and could add significant costs in drag or fluid resistance
.
💦 they possess a prehensile tail that can be used to hold onto substrate and avoid being swept away in strong surges- much like that of their seahorse relatives and unlike that of both the weedy and Leafy sea dragons. It is unknown if this trait was once lost by a common ancestor and they have re-acquired it or if in fact an absence of a prehensile tail in the weedy and Leafy sea dragons has independently evolved in each of the species.

Ive never gone with a white frame before, but it felt right with this. I feel like it really puts the spotlight all on the octopus! 🐙 which has a LOT going on!

Meet the third and final (that we know of anyway 😜) of the Sea Dragon species; The Ruby Sea Dragon 'Phyllopteryx dewysea'
.
You can probably guess where it gets its name? Yep, from its beautiful ruby red colour!
.
The species was identified from a specimen collected from a trawl off the West Australian coast in 2007 linking it with a specimen that washed up in Cottesloe back in 1919, allowing researchers from the Western Australian Museum to name and describe the species.
.
It made for a tricky painting as my reference images consisted of dead specimens, Skeletons, digital models and 1 poor quality live footage. I feel like the finished painting has a somewhat vintage scientific illustration feel? Which I actually kind of love.
